In recent years, more and more Mandarin interpreters are assisting Mandarin-speaking pregnant women in their medical care in the United States. However, it is not so easy for interpreters to be familiar with the medical terminology and the tests that are commonly done during a woman’s pregnancy.

Also, there are huge cultural differences between the U.S. and China in the medical care practices a woman may experience before, during, and after pregnancy. These differences may lead the American healthcare providers and Mandarin-speaking new moms to have difficulty understanding each other even when the interpreter is accurate and complete in relaying information from one language to the other.

Learning Objectives:

The intent of this presentation, which will be done mostly in Mandarin, is to help Mandarin interpreters to:

  • better understand the stages of pregnancy,
  • acquire the terminology for the common medical conditions and procedures that may be discussed,
  • practice sample dialogues, and
  • consider some of the common cultural challenges in this area of medicine.

Jin Yan

Jin Yan, CHI  is a mother of two, a freelance interpreter and a Certified Healthcare Interpreter for Mandarin. She was born and raised in Shanghai, China. English was her first foreign language. She quickly learned to appreciate that it holds a universe of wisdom and richness of culture far different from the Chinese language and culture.

With over ten years of professional experience including on-site, video and telephone interpreting, she has worked for a broad range of clients in health care, business, the military, government agencies, non-profit and non-governmental organizations—everything from small family-owned restaurants to major global corporations.

Assisting Jin Yan with the questions during the presentation will be Lu Zhu, CHI, CMI. Lu is fluent in Mandarin, Japanese and English. He is certified for Mandarin by both CCHI and NBCMI. He has more than fifteen years’ experience interpreting in healthcare, mental health, workers compensation and community settings.
